Decorating Styles Changing with the Times (and my new love for blue)!

I used to hate the color blue.

I wonder if it stemmed from the fact that I had to endure wearing a polyester blue uniform to high school every day?

Seeing blue may have subconsciously reminded me of the scratchy fabric (not to mention the calculus)!

But then something happened to make me change my blue hating mind.

I spotted these mid century blue velvet chairs at a consignment shop.  Loving their shape, I scooped them up thinking I would reupholster them.

I brought them home and put them in their place by the fireplace and slowly they started to grow on me.

One thing led to another and the next thing I knew I was buying buying blue pillows.

Before I could stop myself, I painted my outdoor dresser planter an electric shade of peacock blue.

I’ve got the blues and I never thought it would happen to me.  Goes to show you that tastes change and grow over time.

I think I’ll keep the blue coming …

as long as it’s not polyester.

Is there something you never thought you’d learn to love?

  1. But the real question is: Did the nuns smack you? (I have always liked blue and have had it in homes 1 & 2, and it reappears in this house–even though I have heard a blue-eyed blonde who decorates with blue is cliche. I answer by pointing out that I am a walking cliche, so just go with it.)

  2. The color orange. Too much of it in the seventies did me in until 2012 – now I’m in love once again!!!

  3. I grew up with blue in every room. It is my Mom’s favorite color. So, when it was time for me to decorate my own house, I did not put blue anywhere. I have found that over the past couple of years that I am loving blue. It is such a peaceful color. Now I know why my mom had it everywhere! Life to the full! Melissa

  4. i love those chairs!!! i’m a green girl at heart; but once i inherited my grandmother’s “blue willow,” the color blue began to creep into the scheme. i find that i actually love the combination of blue & green together. but i’m most surprised by my ever-growing love for grey & orange!

  5. I’m totally laughing at Kirby’s remark! Due to the fact that I too wore uniforms, only they were forest green, that I took a great disdain for dark green colors or plaid! Thank goodness for us, there are many shades of blue and green and most of the nuns were pretty tolerant. We are rebels, baby!!

  6. I’m with Heidi! I really think orange is growing on me. Although….I was staring at these plates in Hobby Lobby that were blue and green and calling my name. 🙂

Have a great day rock star!

  7. I’ve come full circle with blue! My house was nothing but cobalt and denim in 1995… then I got rid of everything blue and went totally neutral. Since then I’ve had red, then yellow/orange as accents. Back to neutral in 2008. Added in greens and now what do you know? That sneaky blue has been showing up with the green! Purple is the only color that hasn’t made an appearance around here… but given my track record it will probably show up soon. I’m dying over those chairs. SCORE!!! xoxo jules

  8. Love them!! I wouldn’t touch them.

I have a slight addiction with all things blue and green. it’s amazing how a colour can transform a room – and your life! They look amazing! I love the carpet the chair is sitting on too (and the table beside it!

As usual, your room looks pulled together beautifully! 🙂

  9. Oh I’m a blueaholic. Love it! It’s so calming. Love the chair in your article and the pillows. The other day in Monschau, Germany I found a Wedgwood cup. Little but oh so pretty. My Polish Pottery is mostly blue and the Delft Pottery is blue as well. Love it! So happy you’ve become a convert. Lisa

  10. Unlike you Kelly, Blue has always been my favorite color, imagine a teen girl with a blue bedroom, that’s me! Anyway, I feel the same way about yellow, never in my dreams would I think of using yellow in my home, but last summer, my house was bursting with this color and I love it too! Funny how our tastes change over time. 🙂

  11. LOVE that blue chair. It’s gorgeous. Would look perfect in my living room. 😉

Like some of the other people who commented, I never thought I’d like orange. But a couple of years ago when we had our basement family room painted, I had the top halves of the walls painted a deep pumpkin. (Bottom halves of the walls are white wainscoting.) I love it!

  12. I’m a huge blue fan, but then again, i didn’t have uniforms! Although last night I did have a dream that I was taking colleg elevel calculus and couldn’t do it! Thank goodness that phase is behind me:)

I’m loving the blue flower-ish pillow!

  13. I’m the same way – I used to hate blue, but now I’m starting to think I need to add some blue? I’m still on the fence, but love your chairs and the blues you have added – your room is beautiful!

  14. Blue was always my favourite colour. I used to always decorate in browns and tans…boring!! Now I’m loving white…and all kinds of whites…especially grey-whites…and blue accents. 🙂

  15. I have gone back on forth with blue for years. I loved it for years- got so tired of it I couldn’t stand looking at it and now I like it again. I saw your name in Romantic Homes and I’ll mention you on my blog on Thursday- xo Diana

  16. I’m with you on the “never thought I’d like blue” train. Growing up my older sister loved blue so of course, I did not. Now it is making it’s way into my home. It is so calming and goes great with so many colors. I love the shade of blue of those chairs.

  17. I never thought I’d pretty much stop buying magazines. I love magazines, but blogs are better. I have always, ALWAYS loved blue. First it was navy, then cobalt or denim. Now it’s any old blue.
