Two Christmas Magazine Features & a Behind the Scenes Peek!

I’m excited to share that I’m in two Christmas magazine features right now! I’ll share some behind the scenes info on how magazines work, why they reuse content, why some purchase photos instead of hiring their own photographer, bloopers and more! Plus, I’m flipping through the pages of my latest feature so you can get a peek at the photos.

I made this short little video so you can see the feature for yourself!

Did you know that magazines reuse content again and again to save money? My spread that appeared in the Better Homes & Gardens December 2019 issue is now featured in the Better Homes & Gardens Christmas Ideas 2020 issue (they use the same exact same photos)! You’ll see these photos floating around the Better Homes & Gardens website and social media pages for years to come.

Did you know that magazines purchase photo usage rights from photographers? Modern Farmhouse Home and Design Magazine purchased the photos used in the BH&G article. The magazine saves on scouting, photographer, and stylists fees. Modern Farmhouse called me for a fresh interview and I was happy to see that they used some never before seen photos that didn’t make the BH&G issue (I love the one of Sushi and me in my sunroom)!

Even with my detailed interviews, both magazines included some bloopers!

Better Homes & Gardens points out that my kitchen island lights were a DIY. They were not! I bought the lights just as they are.

Modern Farmhouse Home and Design says that my living room Christmas tree is decked out in family ornaments. Well, normally it is, but if you look at the photo, you can see that the only ornaments I used that year were clip on candles and faux snowballs. I’m sure some readers were very confused when they noticed that!

If you look closely, you’ll notice that my fireplace isn’t lit in any of the photos! There was a team of five BH&G photographers, editors and stylists and nobody noticed after taking about 8 million photos until I finally did. They reshot all of the pics but for some reason, only the ones without the fire blazing made it into the magazine.

It’s been such a fun experience being featured in these magazines and I love that my girls can look back on them and even show my future grandkids some day!

Speaking of Christmas! Is it me, or is anyone else in the mood to start decking their halls. I have been getting ready for my annual Christmas Home Tour which will be coming to you the Monday after Thanksgiving.

  1. Kelly, I am so very happy for you! You so deserve this! Your home is beautiful and your style is one of a kind. I’m so glad to be on this journey with you! ❤

  2. Very interesting, things i certainly didn’t know. These were such wonderful pictures of your Christmas but, you always are so creative in all your Christmas decorating, it’s always a joy to see what you have come up with. Have fun and stay warm.

  3. Love love your features. Yes, can be frustrating when there are some incorrect facts. You actually could have DIY’d those light fixtures!! And maybe Sushi looks better in front of a non-lit fireplace.
Congrats. Looking forward to seeing what you do this year!
