Vintage Glam Bedroom Makeover
My girls turned 16 in November. That means drivers permits (I have the ragged cuticles and bald patches to prove it). It also means time for bedroom updates – my birthday gift to them! My girls are identical twins but they definitely have their own distinct personalities. Olivia was born exactly one hour before her sister (don’t worry, I had a great epidural) and she definitely had her own vision for her room. Here’s what she (with a little help from me!) came up with … Picking out paint is hard. (almost as hard as being a front seat passenger while my girls learn to navigate the road) Picking out paint with an opinionated 16 year old almost drove me to the brink of insanity. Now put on your sunglasses and get ready for the before pic …
BEFORE – when you let your 8 year old daughter pick the paint color
After putting about a dozen gray samples on the wall, we finally marched down to the paint store to get some mediation (from someone my daughter might actually listen to)! We settled on Smoke Embers from Benjamin Moore and it’s such a gorgeous shade of gray. Both mom and daughter are happy. Olivia actually stole this bed from my guest room. It’s a favorite bed that is so affordable from Joss & Main and I love it so much that I ordered a similar style to replace the guest room bed. We kept her nightstand and dresser which are basic white and glammed it up with a crystal lamp. Like mother, like daughter – she loves to write and this journal is always ready for her thoughts. How cute are these New York taxi sheets! I want them for my own room. Every teen needs a glamorous place to primp. The mirrored desk is also from Joss and Main and the comfy white chair is from HomeGoods. Mixing metals adds interest and I love the rose gold lamp with marble base. A cake stand corrals the clutter. A vintage Bertoia child’s chair makes a perfect nightstand when space is tight. Disclaimer: no blood was shed during this teen girl bedroom makeover … although there may have been a few eye rolls, dramatic sighs and tears (from me).
Love love love it!
thank you Lynn!
Great job. Where’s your other teen’s bedroom, or do the girls share?….you did say twins..
I’ll share my other daughters room soon – wait til you see her before paint color Marge! Yes, the girls are twins!!
This is a great bedroom for your daughter. Yes our children can be difficult one minute but oh so wonderful the next, have fun with them it is a perfect age. lol!
So true Marlene! I am enjoying every minute of it!!
This is a fabulous room! I love it! I have so many NY items even though I live in England. The bedding , cushion & artwork are fabulous.
Thanks so much Shirley! I do love the big apple – but I’d love to visit England!
Kelly, I love how the room looks. I know what you mean about nail biting with teenage drivers. My youngest is now 17 and I have done this with my 2 older kids. Yikes!!! Pat S
So do I just close my eyes and hope for the best?!
DO NOT CLOSE YOUR EYES! You can’t really relax until they have been driving a lot longer. I watched the road and traffic as if I was driving which saved us a couple of times. Example: One of my kids went to pull out of a parking lot and I had to yell stop because they didn’t see the car barreling around the curve. Whew! I always tell them to drive safe and watch out for all the other idiots on the road. Never take off as soon as the light is turning green because other drivers sometimes run lights. Oh, and pray. Patience. It is definitely a nerve- wracking time. As they starting driving on their own, it was a much- needed break but also kind of sad. I missed it with my son the most because that is when he would fill me in on things. Pat S
Just kidding – I want to close my eyes but don’t! I also want my own brake and steering wheel on the passenger side! I will survive this – and I agree, it will be a sad day when they no longer need chauffeur mom to drive them everywhere!
Kelly! This room is so great: just perfect for a teen! I loved our visit to NY and have a “thing” for the taxis ~ I even opened the window at our hotel so I could hear the taxi drivers honking their horns at night! (Yes, I’m a CRAZY woman!) So, of course, I went straight to the Taxi sheets, but was disappointed to find the link only goes to a site selling full sets! I have to do more research!
Also, love the three art pieces … so I must go to Home Goods (tho’ to preserve my bank account, I try not to go very often!)!
Can’t wait to see the other twin’s “Sweet 16” room! Thanks for sharing!
Howdy. Your site is very professional and comfortable. Can you tell me the color of the Joss and Main metal bed frame featured above? Is it dark brown or black? Nice bed. Thank you…..
Thank you – the bed is black
